Non Western Culture

In Search of the True West: Culture, Economics, and Problems of Russian Development by Esther Kingston-Mann,

In Search of the True West: Culture, Economics, and Problems of Russian Development by Esther Kingston-Mann,
This ground-breaking work documents Russian efforts to appropriate Western solutions to the problem of economic backwardness since the time of Catherine the Great. Entangled then as now with issues of cultural borrowing, educated Russians searched for Western nations, ideas, non western culture and social groups that embodied universal economic truths applicable to their own country. Esther Kingston-Mann describes Russian Westernization--which emphasized German as well as Anglo-U.S. economics--while she raises important questions about core values of Western culture non western culture and how cultural values non western culture and priorities are determined. This is the first historical account of the significant role played by Russian social scientists in nineteenth-century Western economic non western culture and social thought. In an era of rapid Western colonial expansion, the Russian quest for the "right" Western economic model became more urgent: Was Russia condemned to the fate of India if it did not become an England? In the 1900s, Russian liberal economists emphasized cultural difference non western culture and historical context, while Marxists non western culture and prerevolutionary government reformers declared that inexorable economic laws doomed peasants non western culture and their "medieval" communities. On the eve of 1917, both the tsarist regime non western culture and its leading critics agreed that Russia must choose between Western-style progress or "feudal" stagnation. And when peasants non western culture and communes survived until Stalin's time, he mercilessly destroyed them in the name of progress. Today Russia's painful modernizing traditions shape the policies of contemporary reformers, who seem as certain as their predecessors that economic progress requires wholesale obliteration of the past.

Non-Western Perspectives on Human Communication by Min-Sun Kim,
What it means to be a self - non western culture and a self communicating non western culture and being in a particular culture - are key issues interwoven throughout Min-Sun Kim's impressive text, Non-Western Perspectives on Human Communication. Going beyond cultural descriptions or instructions on adapting to specific cultures, the author interrogates the very core assumptions underlying the study of human communication non western culture and challenges longstanding individualistic, Western models on which much intercultural research is based. Kim proposes a non-western way of conceptualizing identity, or the "self" - the cornerstone of cultural research -- illuminating how traditional western non western culture and non-western views can be blended into a broader, more realistic understanding of cultures non western culture and communication. Grounding her work in a thorough knowledge of the literature, she challenges students non western culture and researchers alike to reexamine their approach to intercultural study.
